Teens seek mantle of excellence

Thirty South Fulton County females selected for mentoring in the second year of the Georgia Teen of Excellence program will be congratulated at a kickoff banquet, 7 p.m next Tuesday.

The participants, ages 12 to 18 from Red Oak public housing, will meet with government and business officials at the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility, 677 Fairburn Road SW, Atlanta.

Parents, the Housing Authority of Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Fulton County Board of Commissioners, middle and high school principals and local community leaders also will attend.

For the next six months, the girls will attend weekly two-hour workshops to explore alternatives to early and unwanted pregnancy, build self-esteem, and break the cycle of poverty.

They will also hone their poise and stage presence in rehearsals for a December debutante pageant, at which one person will be crowned Miss Georgia Teen of Excellence and receive a college scholarship and other gifts.

The reigning queen is Adrienne Howard, a rising senior at Creekside High School. The Georgia Teen of Excellence Program is cosponsored by the Housing Authority of Fulton County and Community Opportunities Centers Inc.
