School board approves personnel changes

The Fulton County Board of Education conducted a called meeting via teleconference Wednesday with all members participating.

The board approved out-of-system travel for an employee to testify before the House Agricultural Committee in Washington, D.C., concerning an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act Bill.

Also approved were the following superintendent's recommendations for employment, promotion and transfer:

F Sheila Michael, Cobb County school administrative assistant, to assistant principal at River Eves ES.

F Cheryl Williams, Mimosa Elementary curriculum support teacher, to assistant principal at that school.

F Tracie Whelchel, administrative intern, to assistant principal at McNair MS.

F Debra Mosely, Chattahoochee HS administrative assistant, to North Springs HS assistant principal.

F Eulonda Washington, McNair MS assistant principal, to Banneker HS assistant principal.

Board members discussed transportation options for majority-to-minority students who attend the Fulton County Charter High School for mathematics and science. The item will be further discussed and acted on at a future board meeting.

Last month, the board staged honors for students. Receiving recognition for outstanding achievement were:

F Lauren Raymond, Milton High, grand prize winner of the Francophonie 2001 Contest, a statewide program sponsored by Georgia Tech to promote French culture and use of technology.

F MeChelle Brown, Independence High, national PTA Reflections Program winner.

F Roswell High girls gymnastics team, state AAAA champions for the second consecutive year and third time in the last five years.

F Kim Feathers, Creekside High, finalist in the Coca-Cola "Share the Dream" essay competition.

Outstanding staff. Two mathematics teachers received recognition:

F Lee Ann Destito, Findley Oaks Elementary, 2001 Excellence in Teaching of Mathematics, sponsored by the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and The Roundtable Coalition.

F Debbie Polk, Taylor Road Middle, Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Junior High School Mathematics Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America.

Career planning honors: Bear Creek Middle received congratulations for its first place state and third place national finish in the "Planning for Life" recognition program sponsored by the Georgia and American School Counselors Associations.

Policies and procedures: The policy and procedure review schedule was presented for information. Presented for first reading were revisions to the policies and procedures regarding administrative records, while the transfers and withdrawals procedure revision was presented for second reading.

The revised electronic network access and field trips policies and procedures received approval.

Salary schedules: In May, the board approved a 4-percent salary increase for all employees and step for eligible employees.

Salary schedules reflecting this raise were presented for information and are posted on the Web site under Jobs/Salary Schedules.

Action items: The Carl D. Perkins vocational and technical grant applications were approved, along with the annual Fulton County Arts Council grant. Student accident insurance for 2002 received approval.
