Rico to get youth home despite protests

Residents of the Rico community will soon have a juvenile home in their community.

Last week, the Fulton County Commission approved the center despite objections from neighbors in the area.

The center will be on a six-acre tract on Rico Road and house six girls, ages 11 to 17.

Commissioner Bill Edwards voted against the center.

The center was the source of heated debate earlier this summer when neighbors turned out in force to state their opposition to the home.

Many of the neighbors are concerned about security at the facility. Proponents claim the girls would be under 24-hour security.

The home is the first in South Fulton County and organizers of the home maintain that residents of the home will be runaways and that nobody at the home will have a criminal record.

Organizers of the home said the land was donated to the Fulton County Juvenile Justice Fund to be used as a youth home.

The commissioners approved the use for the home, but said if the center ever abandons the home, the use will revert to residential.
