Rep. Collins visits U.S. troops in Bosnia

Rep. Mac Collins, who represents Fayette County, visited Bosnia this past weekend on a four-day trip to see how Georgia's National Guardsmen are faring during their peacekeeping mission in the war-torn Balkan nation.

The Hampton Republican joined Reps. Saxby Chambliss, Nathan Deal, Johnny Isakson and Sanford Bishop and Maj. Gen. David Poythess, adjutant general of the Georgia National Guard, on a delegation to see firsthand the conditions faced by Georgia's 48th Brigade, which has been deployed in Bosnia.

They visited soldiers at several military bases, including Camp Comanche, Eagle Base and Base Conner.

"It is important for the soldiers of the Georgia National Guard and all service men and women serving overseas to know that we value the sacrifices they are making as they serve the cause of peace in a foreign nation," Collins said.

In a recently passed House resolution, authored by Collins and cosponsored by the Georgia congressional delegation, the U.S. Congress expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation for the continued commitment of the citizen-soldiers of the National Guard.

"The resolution also honored the often overlooked sacrifices made by the families and employers of the Guardsmen, who are so often called away from home for extended periods of time," Collins said.

"I regard it as our responsibility as elected representatives to ensure our soldiers are properly equipped and supplied as they carry out their mission, and look forward to visiting these brave soldiers in Bosnia," he added.
