Seabaugh plans transportation town hall meeting

If you want to know what the future holds in store for transportation in Fayette County, state Sen. Mitch Seabaugh has a meeting for you.

Seabaugh will bring state Department of Transportation officials to Fayette for a town hall meeting Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the Gathering Place in Peachtree City.

"I want the meeting to be very positive and upbeat and informative," said Seabaugh.

Seabaugh also will have a town hall meeting in Coweta County to address transportation concerns there, and at both meetings presenters will touch on projects of common concern to both counties.

DOT representatives will present information on time tables for construction projects here, and will hear comments from those who attend.

"What are people's concerns ... are there any suggestions out there ... it's an opportunity for the DOT to hear from the public," he said.

Many local transportation projects have been on hold for years while state and federal agencies, with involvement from environmental organizations, worked to make sure future transportation plans include ways to reduce air pollution.

The Atlanta Regional Commission's new three-year and 25-year transportation plans were approved last year, but work was held up by an environmental group's lawsuit.

A judge recently ruled in favor of the state DOT, and officials are hoping that work can now get underway.

Fayette's most urgent project is widening Ga. Highway 74 south from its intersection with Ga. Highway 54, and widening Hwy. 54 into Coweta County.

Local officials also have been pushing to have a long-term project, construction of a bypass around Fayetteville on Ga. Highway 85, moved up on DOT's schedule.
