A Jonesboro man faces numerous criminal charges after he fought with a Fayetteville police officer who was conducting a traffic stop, police said.

Anthony B. Bryant, 20, was arrested Wednesday, July 11 and charged with six felony counts of obstructing a police officer, one felony count of simple battery on a police officer and misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, underage possession of alcohol and public drunkenness. Police say he punched officer Jeff McMullan in the face during the scuffle.

McMullan was working a traffic stop after 10 p.m. at the parking lot of the Flash Foods on East Lanier Avenue when the incident occurred, according to a police report. A green Hyundai pulled nearby and its driver asked McMullan for assistance with Bryant because she was afraid of him, said Lt. Beverly Trainor of the Fayetteville Police Department.

Bryant got out of the Hyundai and McMullan approached him to assess the situation when Bryant punched him in the face, Trainor said.

Moments later, five other officers responded and helped McMullan handcuff Bryant so he could be taken to the Fayette County Jail, Trainor said.

McMullan was not seriously injured and returned to work the next day,
