Amphitheater eyed for Fayetteville

Move over Peachtree City Fayetteville may soon have its own amphitheater.

Main Street Fayetteville officials will present plans for an amphitheater on land that's currently part of The Villages at LaFayette Park, the 200-home mixed use development under construction between Fayette County High School and Ga. Highway 54, according to Nancy Price, Main Street director.

"It will be wonderful for Fayetteville and for the community," said Price, adding that Fayetteville leaders don't envision using the facility for numerous pop concerts, as Peachtree City uses its Fred Brown Jr. Amphitheater.

"There will be school events, community theater, the free July Jam concerts ... we don't want to change our focus. It'll be very much a community venue," said Price. "It'll be more of a cultural venue," she added.

Price said cost figures aren't yet available from architects, and several ideas will be presented to the City Council concerning the size and type of facility, so those numbers will be forthcoming.

"It's been in the works for a little while," she said. One possible funding source officials are considering is the city's hotel/motel tax, she added.

"The council is very supportive" of the idea, Price said.
