Fire station renovations completed

Recent construction renovations and additions to fire station 40 at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport have transformed the facility into a spacious six-bay station featuring more than 18,000 square feet of space.

Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, airport executives and Atlanta fire officials sponsored an open house and dedication ceremony Thursday to highlight the construction improvements.

"Changes in the Atlanta Fire Department's airport operations allow both sides of the world's busiest airport to be protected at all times," said Campbell. "The upgrades demonstrate our commitment to providing an uncompromising level of safety for all who travel through Hartsfield."

Originally built in 1975, station 40 is one of four fire-fighting facilities on airport property. Strategically situated to provide fire protection to the south side of the airport, the station can accommodate six trucks and 25 firefighters.

The $2.3 million improvement project involved expanding the station's common-use areas such as the kitchen, break room, dining room and day room, as well as the men's sleeping quarters. Station additions include new sleeping quarters, lockers and shower facilities for female firefighters and two command offices.

Aviation general manager Ben DeCosta commented: "Hartsfield now has the capacity and ability to handle two aircraft rescue fire-fighting emergencies simultaneously."

As part of the expansion, a four-bay apparatus room was built to accommodate additional fire vehicles and equipment. The station's fire-fighting equipment includes a Jaguar K-15 rapid intervention vehicle that delivers 1,500 gallons of foam and water, a Jaguar K-40 mass application unit equipped to produce 4,000 gallons of foam and water, a 150-foot, tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck and a 1,500-gallon-per-minute pumper.

Contractors that worked on the station 40 expansion and upgrades include The Lions Group Inc., Aviating Consulting Engineers, Columbus Cabinet Co., Hardeman Electric, Membrane System Inc., Professional Plumbing, River's Enterprise Inc., Southland Fence Co., Steward Bros. Inc., Trinidad Engineering, Worsham Sprinkler, Overhead Door, Julia Kristi Enterprise, Ebony Glass and Mirror, D.W.
