Fulton teachers honored for education excellence

Heather Lubeck inspires her Seaborn Lee Elementary School special education students to learn through engagement in the world around them.

Elliot Cheely's Seaborn Lee Elementary students construct model airplanes as examples to learn math, science, the history of flight and the importance of following directions. Sixth- to eighth-grade students at Steve Braden's Holcomb Bridge Middle School learn earth science in Alpharetta by planting flowers and then dissecting them.

Preston Hall of Frank McClarin High School in College Park engages his at-risk students in practical work experience: year-long marketing projects that teach necessary business skills.

Lubeck earned the ultimate recognition as one of four Honor Teachers selected, while Cheely, Braden and Hall earned honoree status as 2001 Honor Teacher Award winners for their education excellence and innovative programs.

For the first time in the history of the Honor Teacher Awards, the number of honorees was expanded from 12 to 38. These 38 educators from metro Atlanta and throughout the state of Georgia received a total of $79,000 in educational grants.

"We wanted to acknowledge the innovation demonstrated by teachers on a local level in metropolitan Atlanta and throughout the state of Georgia," said Mike King, public editor for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Honor Teacher Awards is one of the community outreach programs presented by the newspaper to acknowledge education excellence. Civic partners in the program include the Georgia Association of Educators, Georgia Congress of Parents and Teachers and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and this year's corporate sponsors the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Power and WSB-TV.

In addition to the award winners, who received $10,000, finalists were each awarded $3,000.

Local and state honorees were awarded $500 each.
