Union City eyes 300-acre annexation

Union City could grow dramatically if a proposed annexation receives the blessing of the Atlanta Regional Commission and the city's leaders.

Developer D.R. Horton-Torrey Homes wants the city to annex more than 300 acres near Oakley Industrial Boulevard so they can build 1,240 homes.

City planning director Ann Lipmann said the annexation would be one of the biggest the city has had in years and would continue the trend of rapid growth in the South Fulton city.

ARC officials are evaluating the project as a Development of Regional Impact, which means that governments in surrounding areas will be asked for comment, and Lipmann believes ARC will finish examining the project by mid-August.

If the ARC finishes in that time frame, city officials would then discuss the project in late September or October.

The company has already petitioned the city to annex 38 acres off of Koweta Road to add to its existing Valley Lake subdivision. Torrey Homes wants to add 100 homes to the existing 182 homes.

The Koweta Road annexation will be discussed at a July 30 public hearing at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
