Apology cools rift between Kenn, Edwards

A letter from Fulton County Commission Chairman Mike Kenn that was printed in the South Fulton Citizen June 22 has caused political friction between Kenn and Commissioner Bill Edwards.

But things appear to be on the mend this week after Edwards received a letter of apology from Kenn's chief of staff, Robb Simms.

In the letter Simms asked Edwards to accept his apology for the letter in the paper.

"As the chairman's chief of staff, things of this nature are ultimately my responsibility and I want you to know that it was not my intention to personally attack you in any way," he wrote.

Simms said he was hopeful the chairman, Edwards and the two staffs could continue to work together.

In the letter that ran in the paper, Kenn took Edwards to task for his position on the proposed extension of Hartsfield Airport's fifth runway.

"On May 16, Commissioner Bill Edwards sponsored a resolution against the airport runway extension. The resolution failed to receive the four votes needed to pass. What, you might ask, would this resolution have accomplished if it had passed?

"Absolutely nothing there was nothing in Commissioner Edwards' resolution that would have done anything to make the people of South Fulton lives better. There was nothing in the resolution that would have done anything to relieve any of the burdens of the fifth runway expansion."

Kenn took exception to Edwards calling his vote against the referendum a slap in the face and "sellout."

"The people of South Fulton deserve something more than political grandstanding. The people of South Fulton deserve leadership and results," the letter said.

Edwards said this week he was glad to receive the apology letter and would release a full statement on the issue at a later time.
