Power plant hearings delayed

Citizens eager to find out whether a power plant will be built in their backyards will have to wait until the early fall for an answer.

That's the word from Duffy Communications' Brian Rubenstein, who represents Williams Company in its efforts to build a plant in South Fulton County, and Dan Skizim, project manager.

The company has asked that its application to rezone 288 acres for the plant, on Peters Road at Old Jonesboro Road, be delayed.

"We chose to push back the zoning date so we could complete the [state Environmental Protection Division] air permit application and provide the county with all the information it will need to make an informed decision," said Skizim.

"We believe very strongly in the merits and benefits of this project and believe that once the county has had the chance to review all of the factual information, it will determine that the Fulton Energy Center is indeed a beneficial project for the community," he added.

An information meeting is scheduled Sept. 13 at the Fulton Service Center South on Stonewall Tell Road.

Public hearings on the rezoning application are now scheduled for Oct. 6 with the county Planning Commission and Nov. 7 with the Fulton County commission.

The company also has submitted a rezoning application with Union City. Nearly 32 acres of the site is within the city limits and officials were requesting that the property's zoning category be changed from Community Unit Plan to Light Industrial.

The hearing was set for July 30, but Rubenstein said the Union City hearing also will be delayed until the fall.
