PTC Council to consider rezoning for restaurant

A rezoning request to turn a custom frame shop into a restaurant will be considered by the Peachtree City Council at its meeting Thursday night.

Pat Wright is seeking a rezoning to general commercial for The Galleries, which is located off Ga. Highway 74 North in the Whitlock Place subdivision. Currently, the property is zoned for limited use commercial, limiting the property to its current use or the previous zoning of office-institutional.

City staff have opposed the rezoning, citing that it would constitute a spot zoning and open up adjacent properties for commercial development. The Planning Commission heard the matter at its June 25 meeting but did not recommend approval to City Council.

Wright argued at that meeting that property within 500 feet of hers is zoned commercially. She said she wants to sell the building, which is currently a custom frame shop that leases additional space to individuals starting their own small businesses.

The prospective owner wants to open a local restaurant there, Wright noted. But the area for small businesses will be retained, she added.

The restaurant would be less than 6,000 square feet, Wright said.

No one has protested the rezoning request while it was discussed during two Planning Commission meetings. Several people have spoken in favor of the rezoning, however.
