Fayette students meet Germany's chancellor

German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had just put in a typical day's work: wrestling with shifting political coalitions, preparing for upcoming summit meetings in Goteborg, and generally attending to the business of running a nation.

But when he took time out to greet a group of American exchange students from Fayette County and their German partners, he demonstrated his interest in diplomatic initiatives both great and small.

For 22 Sandy Creek High School students, the encounter was a highlight of the three-week visit in Germany. The two-day whirlwind visit to Berlin was but one feature of the stay, which also included visits to Hannover, Wolfsburg, and the ecologically important North Sea Island of Juist.

Sandy Creek's German language program has maintained an educational exchange with its partner-school in Braunschweig since 1994.
