School officers now on summer patrol at Fayette Pavillion

School resource officers from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department are now patrolling the Fayette Pavillion since school is out of session.

Maj. Bruce Jordan said the five officers were moved there in response to a request from Sheriff Randall Johnson to enhance safety in the area. In addition to patrolling in uniform, the officers have also been patrolling in plain clothes, Jordan added.

"It has been a real good deterrent," Jordan said. "We have gotten excellent responses from the stores."

Previously, the officers have been used over the summer months to help juvenile investigators, Jordan said. Typically, juvenile complaints increase over the summer months when children are out of school, Jordan added.

Recently, the Sports Authority donated two bicycles for the officers to use; the store has also committed to performing routine maintenance on the bikes in support of the efforts.

Sports Authority manager Rodney Jeter, who is a former police officer, said he understands how budgetary concerns can prevent officers from getting necessary equipment to do their jobs.

"We wanted to make sure we're doing our part as a company to keep things right," Jeter said.
