Grants bolster local parks

Fulton County residents will continue to enjoy five recreational programs funded through parks and recreation grants ranging from $18,000 to $35,400.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the grants at a recent meeting.

Cochran Mill Nature Preserve in Fairburn will receive $19,200 for exhibits about wildlife, gardening, animal care and teaching. The center also offers programs addressing conservation and team-building, as well as special events.

Sandy Springs Historic Community Foundation will receive $28,800 for operation of the century-old Williams-Payne House.

School children and adults can visit the site to learn about Fulton County history and life on a farm.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center in Alpharetta will receive $18,000. This facility serves as a wildlife sanctuary and natural green space, as well as a location for special events, such as concerts and art exhibitions.

Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell will receive $35,400 for nature programs, a wildlife rehabilitation clinic and exhibits.

The center serves about 100,000 visitors annually, including 50,000 school children on field trips.

Greater Atlanta Inner City Games, operated by the Georgia State Research Foundation, will receive $18,000. This program will offer computer courses for approximately 1,200 youth ages 6 through 18, as well as sports clinics.

The organization's mission discourages gangs, drugs and violence while emphasizing interracial harmony and teamwork.
