Jail construction begins

Last week, Fulton County officials conducted the ground breaking for a new intake area and kitchen at the Fulton County Jail.

Members of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and the Sheriff's Department attended the ceremony at 1101 Jefferson St., Atlanta.

The $17 million project will also include expansion of the current intake area, a new employee parking area, and improvement to the existing jail infrastructure such as road and curb repair. A total of 50,133 square feet will be constructed and 10,584 square feet will be remodeled. An underground corridor will connect the existing jail basement with the new kitchen.

RMJ Construction Managers will oversee the project. FULCO Jail Builders is the contractor, and Turner and Associates is the architect.

The Sheriff's Department manages the jail, which houses approximately 2,700 inmates.
