Mary Margaret Lehman of Peachtree City wants to do her part for breast cancer research.

So in October, she'll join several other Fayette residents and nearly 3,000 others walking 60 miles in three days in October as part of the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day fund-raiser in Atlanta.

Lehman, 31, decided to participate in the event although she doesn't know anyone suffering from breast cancer.

"I think it's a very good cause," Lehman said.

She hopes to raise $2,500 by the early September deadline. A recent wine-tasting event she held raised $625, she said.

Lehman is also working her way into long-distance walking shape. She and several other local women meet every Saturday and Sunday to train for the 60-mile walk. They're up to 14 miles a day so far, Lehman reported.

In addition to seeking contributions from family and friends in a letter-writing campaign, Lehman is appealing to the public to help also. Anyone interested in making contributions to her effort may contact her via e-mail at mmlehman@peoplepc.com.
