Pared down multipurpose rink slated for Kedron area
By JOHN
MUNFORD
Fairly soon, Peachtree City's recreation program will have another jewel of a facility with a covered multipurpose "rink" at the Kedron recreation area. The $581,230 project will be versatile, allowing for in-line hockey and skating, volleyball, badminton and basketball. Also, the facility could be used for new recreation programs in large, covered open areas, noted city Director of Leisure Services Randy Gaddo in a recent memo to council. The rink area will be surrounded by a raised border called a dasher board system. It will also be lighted with high intensity sports lighting so it can be used at night. A flat grassy area next to the rink will be available for picnics or other outdoor community events which might need shelter from the rain, Gaddo noted. The original low bid for the project was $650,861 from Tomco Construction Inc. To reduce the price, a multipurpose sports field for adults was cut. Other items slashed to lower the price were some parking spots and other non-priority elements, Gaddo noted. Construction of the rink is expected to take six months. City Council approved issuing the revised contract with Tomco Construction at its last meeting. Also, council voted to redirect $24,433 to the rink project from an abandoned plan to hook restrooms at the Riley recreation area to sewer service. The remainder of the funds for that sewer project, $25,566, will be spent to install a six-foot black vinyl coated fence at the new Riley football field and track to protect it from vandalism, Gaddo said.
