Fayette gets first lottery-funded pre-k

The Office of School Readiness has just informed the Fayette County School System that two of its schools are the recipients of the lottery-funded pre-kindergarten program.

The two schools receiving the funding are North Fayette and Brooks Elementary. The pre-K programs will begin this fall and will provide academic instruction to students for a full school day, five days a week. Fayette students turning 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 will be eligible.

First admittance will be granted to students who live in the attendance areas of North Fayette and Brooks Elementary. If there are vacancies after all eligible students in the schools' attendance zones have had an opportunity to register for the program, students residing in any Fayette County area will be considered for admission.

Admission to the pre-K program is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are limited to 20 students each.

Parents can pick up enrollment applications at the two schools. Completed applications can be returned to the schools June 18. In order to register a student, parents or guardians must bring proof of age eligibility such as an official birth certificate, passport, official medical documents or official documents from another country. Proof of age eligibility must be on file the day the student begins the program.

Students must be Georgia residents and parents must agree to send their children to the program for a full school day, five days a week, 180 days per year. Buses will transport the pre-K students to the schools along with other elementary students.

Other documentation required at the time of registration includes proof of residency such as a property deed, original signed lease agreement or affidavit of residency; the child's Social Security number; current gas or electric bill displaying parent or guardian's name and address of service; and photo identification of the parent or guardian registering the student.

Additionally, all students attending the pre-K program must have a Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental examinations (Georgia Department of Human Resources Form 3300) and a DHR Certificate of Immunization Form 3231 (revised 1/2000). Form 3231 replaces Forms 3032 and 3227 and must have either the "date of expiration" or "school attendance" block checked.

Students who attend pre-K must be up to date on all immunizations required for school entry plus Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine.

Students may register prior to the completion of these examinations and certificates. However, the Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental Examinations must be on file within 90 days and immunization certificates must be on file within 30 days of the start of the program. Students are not required to have evidence of age appropriate immunizations or certificates prior to these 30-day or 90-day timelines.

In addition to the two lottery funded programs, Fayette's school system will also be adding its sixth federally funded (Title 1) pre-K program at Oak Grove Elementary School. The other five schools that house Title 1 pre-K programs are Burch, Tyrone, North Fayette, Peachtree City and East Fayette Elementary Schools.

The difference between these programs and the ones funded by the lottery at North Fayette and Brooks Elementary Schools is that students must meet specific readiness criteria to be eligible to participate in Title 1 programs. Parents who would like to see if their children qualify for these programs can contact the individual schools for more information. Enrollment documentation is the same as for the lottery-funded pre-K.
