Be careful with makeup around the eyes

Women who use makeup particularly those who wear contact lenses should be very careful when applying makeup to their faces. Tearing and irritation, while usually just a minor annoyance, could lead to more serious problems.

"When shopping for makeup, women should choose a water-based, hypoallergenic liquid foundation, instead of cream, to prevent leaving a film on their contact lenses," warns Dr. Paul Ajamian, president of the Georgia Optometric Association. "They should also avoid lash-extending mascara, which as fibers that can irritate the eyes, and waterproof mascara, which cannot be easily removed with water and may stain soft contact lenses."

Ajamian also cautions men and women about using hand creams or lotions before handling contacts, because they can leave a flim on their lenses. He says that it is best to use an oil-free moisturizer if possible.

"Women should also keep false eyelash cement nail polish and remover, perfume, and cologne, which can damage the plastic, away from lenses," said Ajamian.

Other tips include using hairspray before putting in contacts.

"If used while they are in, close your eyes during spraying, and for a few seconds afterwards," said Ajamian. "Put on soft contact lenses before applying makeup. Rigid gas-permeable lenses should go on after makeup is applied."

Another caution: Mascara can become contaminated with bacteria when it comes in contact with the skin of the hands and eyelids during daily application.

"The normal eye offers a good barrier against bacterial invasion," said Dr. Ajamian. "However, when the cornea is compromised by insult from a contaminated mascara wand, a bacterial ulcer may result."

Dermatologists suggest replacing mascara every 3 to 6 months or sooner if there are changes in consistency, color or odor. And the Food and Drug Administration advises consumers never to add any liquid to bring the product back to its original consistency.
