Edwards: Trucking firm owes thousands in back taxes

If you owe taxes in Fulton County, you're going to pay them.

That's the message Fulton County Commissioner Bill Edwards is delivering as he starts investigating the trucking industry in the county.

A South Fulton resident tipped Edwards off to a situation at Overnight Transportation on Moreland Avenue, the commissioner said. The company maintains more than 40 vehicles at its site, but none of them are registered in Georgia, he said.

"We've discovered that none of these trucks even leave the state," Edwards said.

Edwards said the county's tax office is investigating how much money is owed the county and he wants them to investigate the company for the last seven years.

"We need to get the money back that is clearly due the county," he said.

Edwards estimated the amount in back taxes was in the thousands of dollars and said he wants to check other trucking companies in the area to see if this is a common practice.

"These companies are cheating the county out of thousands of dollars and tearing up our roads," he said.

Overnight Transportation officials would not comment on the case.
