Clogged manhole blamed for sewage spill

Vandalism is being blamed for a sewage spill Monday that dumped more than 10,000 gallons of raw sewage into Camp Creek.

Fulton County public information official Dwight Townes said the spill occurred at 3:30 p.m. at 4650 Kelden Circle in South Fulton County.

A manhole was apparently blocked and caused the release of the sewage into a tributary of Camp Creek.

Fulton officials rushed to the scene and cleared the blockage. The spill was corrected within an hour.

Townes said it's virtually impossible to tell who or what caused the blockage.

"A lot of times, people dump lawn clippings down a manhole, but public works officials have not said what the cause was," he said.

Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified of the spill and will conduct an investigation into the impact of the spill.
