PTC Development Authority plans look at economic development role By JOHN
MUNFORD
The Peachtree City Development Authority is planning to study its role in the city's economic development arena. Spurred by authority member Doug Warner, the group is considering a workshop or retreat session to discuss a host of topics relating to economic development. Warner said at Monday's meeting that he wanted to wait until the fall so it can happen after a study on local economic development is completed by Georgia Tech. "The authority may need to reexamine itself. What does it do in economic development compared to what the county does?" Warner said. "Do we need to do more economic development or do less?" Warner said the authority has done a "great job" of managing the city's amphitheater and tennis center, but he'd like to explore expanding the authority's role in economic development. Tate Godfrey, who handles economic development for the authority in conjunction with his private job for Pathway Communities, said he welcomed the discussion. "There are plenty of things Peachtree City and Fayette County can do to broaden economic development," Godfrey said. "We need to define more ways for the authority to be more involved." Warner said citizens are often confused about the authority's role. "We're not the ones who brought in Wal-Mart and Home Depot and we don't widen the road," he said. Warner said he envisioned a four- or five-hour workshop to address the issues, but the authority discussed tackling several of the issues at a time during its monthly meetings. A more definitive answer on the scheduling will likely be reached at the authority's next meeting.
