Students dig into Fayette's past

What better way to learn about history than interviewing people who have lived some of it?

Seventh grade gifted English students at Rising Starr Middle School this year completed their second project looking into the history of Fayette communities through the eyes of local residents.

Last year, the students researched the history of Starr's Mill and published a booklet. This year, the subject was the community of Inman.

Students gathered information about the Inman community throughout the year, taking field trips to the Fayette County History Center, having class speakers and conducting personal interviews. The class worked with Janet Mack, immediate past-president of the Fayette County Historical Society, to gather information.

Other guests included John McLucas and John Lynch, who both contributed to the genealogy of the community and provided information about citizens who served in the Civil War and the effects thereof.

The students recently presented the booklets to the Inman community with several notable residents present.

"I hope to continue this series of community books each year," said teacher Sandra Barge.

The Inman booklets may be purchased at Fayette Book Shop for $6.
