Local man hurt in moped wreck

A Fayetteville man is recovering from injuries he received when his moped struck another vehicle on Ga. Highway 314 near the Fayette Pavilion Tuesday afternoon.

Dexter Carrier had a broken leg, a shattered wrist and a shoulder injury, said his sister, Marcia Doss.

Carrier, 42, has been a fixture at the Fayetteville Wendy's where he has worked for 17 years, Doss said. He drives to work on the moped and often wears an orange jumpsuit to make himself more visible to other vehicles, after he's had several close calls, she added.

Carrier, who suffers from speech difficulties, is socially introverted and had lived with his mother until her recent death, Doss said. Since then, he has been scraping by on his Wendy's income although the accident puts his finances in jeopardy, she added. Carrier does not have medical insurance, according to Doss.

Lt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department said Thursday that the investigation into the accident is not complete since Carrier hadn't been interviewed yet. It appears, however, that the driver of the van in the collision had the right of way at the signal, Woodie said.

Carrier was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Woodie said.
