Edgefield's mission: to be a shining light
By CAROLYN CARY
Pastor Eddie Thomas arrived at Edgefield Baptist Church in Fayetteville not quite four years ago and has been instrumental in refurbishing the buildings and grounds. The fellowship hall building, originally built in 1955, served first as a school and a lodge hall. It has now been bricked and serves as a gathering place. "I want to be the light," said Thomas, "to which all Fayette countians come to know about Edgefield Baptist Church." The congregation dates back to the late 1860s and was started by former slaves. It now numbers about 250 members. The first sermons were preached atop a large rock, at what is now Hickory Drive and Ga. Highway 54 west. Several years ago an old outdoor baptismal font was refurbished and once a year there is a baptismal ceremony just as in the "old days." The grounds have been paved and church members enjoy several outdoor barbecues during the year. Thomas participates with other local churches in exchanging ideas and pulpits. He recently took part in a "Strong Hold" conference with Rivers Edge Baptist Church, Glory To God Bible Church, New Covenant Metropolitan Church and Abundant Life Church. Edgefield Baptist will celebrate an anniversary Sunday, Aug. 5 with a special service at 3 p.m. and dinner afterward. The mission statement of the church says: "We are the salt of the earth, effecting a positive change, as we let our light shine that others may see a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Because we believe in an active faith, we seek to meet the spiritual as well as the physical needs of the people in our community. The cornerstone of our mission is to proclaim the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for kingdom building." The church is at 140 Church St., Fayetteville. Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m., worship service is at 10:45 a.m., Intercessory prayers are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Bible Study is on Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Phone 770-461-7388.
