Hooters opening June 26
By MONROE ROARK
Hooters restaurant in Fayetteville is expected to be open within the next eight days. The Fayette County Chamber of Commerce has announced a ribbon cutting at the site, the corner of Ga. highways 85 and 314 in the former Shoney's building, scheduled for Monday, June 25. That event is for corporate officials and special guests, and the restaurant is slated to open its doors to the general public the next day. Restaurant management has applied for a conditional beer and wine license, and the City Council is expected to vote on that at Thursday's regular meeting. No Hooters representatives were present at the council's work session Wednesday night, and there was no discussion of the issue. Development of the site has gone quite smoothly and quietly compared to last summer, when a developer attempted to build a Hooters in another location. That was met by a huge public outcry, as nearly 200 people crammed City Hall to object on moral grounds, citing the traditional "Hooters Girls" attire of t-shirts and shorts worn by servers. The application was eventually quashed due to a lack of necessary road improvements at that location. This time, there was no public hearing at all because the company is moving into an existing building already zoned for restaurant use.
