Justic center at the top of SPLOST wish list By JOHN
THOMPSON
The Coweta County Commission has settled on a list of projects for its upcoming special purpose local option sales tax vote. County Administrator Theron Gay told the County Commission Tuesday that the staff had identified five projects for the Sept. 18 vote. High on the list is the proposed $30 million justice center, along with a new library. Other projects include public safety, which would include a new state patrol barracks and recreation facilities. The final item on Gay's list is expansion of the county's road- and bridge-building program. Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter agreed with the projects, but said the county needs to put bridges and roads higher on the list. The reason, Hunter said, is the state Department of Transportation's agreement to provide an additional 75 cents worth of work on projects for every dollar that Coweta County commits to the program. "You could use money from the general fund to pay for some of these other projects, because you're getting almost double the money from the DOT," Hunter said. Gay agreed, and said the county would also have to meet with all the municipalities in the county to get their projects added to the SPLOST ballot. The administrator said he anticipates meeting with the cities by the end of this month and having a complete list of projects available by the first week in August.
