Fayetteville is creating a new district and expanding an existing one to further its goals regarding the preservation of traditional buildings and architectural styles.

The Historic Preservation Commission has recommended approval of a Historic Preservation District, most of whose boundaries fall into the Main Street District and under the jurisdication of the Downtown Development Authority.

Two small areas not previously in the Main Street District one on the east side of Jeff Davis Drive across from Johnson Avenue, and the other along with south side of East Lanier Avenue across from Gwinnett Street have been included in the proposed Historic Preservation District, so city planning staff recommended that those areas be brought into the Main Street District as well.

Another site not included in the Historic Preservation District, on Georgia Avenue between Jeff Davis and Ga. Highway 85, also is being recommended for inclusion in the Main Street District.

First readings of ordinances regarding both districts were scheduled to be posted at Thursday night's City Council meeting. The ordinance regarding the Historic Preservation District was tabled so that it could be reviewed by the city attorney and properly updated. The Main Street ordinance first reading was posted as scheduled.

A map showing both districts can be seen on this page. For the most part, the Main Street District includes:

Property on both sides of Jeff Davis Avenue, from its intersection with Hwy. 85 at the north to Johnson Avenue on the south.

Property on both sides of Hwy. 85 (Glynn Street), from Georgia Avenue on the north to Grady Avenue on the south.

Property on both sides of Hwy. 54 (Lanier Avenue) on the east side of town, extending to Gwinnett Street on the east.

Property between Hwy. 85 and Jeff Davis Avenue, from Georgia Avenue on the north to just the Grady Avenue intersection on the south.

All property north and east of Grady Avenue, from its intersection with Hwy. 54 (Lanier Avenue) on the west side of town to its intersection with Hwy. 85 on the south.

Property west of LaFayette Avenue, north of Lanier Avenue and south of Fayette County High School, site of the Village development.

Property west of Hwy. 85, south and east of Lafayette Avenue and north of Hwy. 54.
