New garden is for the birds

Students at Burch Elementary School have been busy planning their schoolyard habitat.

With the help of Georgia Wildlife habitat stewards, master composters and master gardeners from the Fayette County Extension Office, and Andy's Nursery, students in Susan Mills' and Katy Lanteris' classes have planted a garden for birds and butterflies to enjoy.

Grants from the National Wildlife Federation and the Georgia Master Gardener Association helped to fund the project. The students researched and selected plants that would feed or shelter wildlife throughout the year.

This spring the students tended to the newly planted garden, keeping it well watered and weed free.

The garden will be available for all students at Burch Elementary to study and observe the wildlife and plants in the garden.
