Local youth wins Scouts' highest honor

Jessica Kirsch received the highest award in Girl Scouting recently, he Gold Award, at a pinning ceremony in Fayetteville.

The Girl Scouts of Pine Valley recognized 10 Senior Girl Scouts for achieving the distinction. To receive the award, a Scout must earn a variety of badges in areas of interest, exploration and leadership, and must plan and implement a community service project requiring at lest 50 hours of work.

Kirsch chose to involve her classmates at Starr's Mill High School in the international mission of the United Methodist Council on Relief. With help from school service clubs and other Girl Scout troops, she assembled 300 "kits for care" for disaster relief in the U.S. and abroad.

Each kit contains a hand towel, a washcloth, a bar of soap, a comb, a toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste, a pair of clippers or a file, and six bandages. Among those participating in assembling the kits were Cub Scout Pack 75, troops of Girl Scout Service Unit 620, the United Methodist Women of Peachtree City United Methodist Church and friends and neighbors.
