United Way announces $263,080 local investment Twelve programs of seven Fayette County charitable organizations will share $263,080 in funding in this year's United Way investment package. It's part of the funding organization's $69.5 million package for the metropolitan Atlanta region, announced this week by the board of directors. Among Fayette grantees are the Association of Village PRIDE, Fayette County Community Schools, Fayette Samaritans Inc., Fayette Senior Services Inc., Fayette Youth Protection Homes Inc., Joseph Sams School and the Visiting Nurse Health System. Providing children with safe, structured, supervised activities during the summer vacation is the aim of SPOT (Special People of Tomorrow), the Fayette Community Schools program being aided by United Way funding. The funding "enables us to have a high ratio of teachers or care givers to students, one to three students" said Jim Pittman, director of community education. "In some cases, it's one on one, and we have 40 to 50 kids in each session," he said, adding that the program costs $190 per students, plus transportation costs. Application forms provide space for parents to state if they need financial aid. "Thanks to United Way grants, we aer able to honor every request," said Pittman. Begining July 1, United Way funds will be paid to the programs, 435 of them metro-wide provided by 246 organizations. Of the United Way's $69.5 million budget, $12.8 million is designated by donors for specific agencies. The organizaiton also will spend $6.8 million, 8 percent, on administation and fund-raising costs, and it's estimated that another 8 percent of the $82.5 million pledged in 2000 will go unpaid.
