Fishers of men and truth slayers By DR. KNOX HERNDON
Last night at my wife Dee and I took our church youth group (TLC) to Sams Auditorium to hear a great presentation play and drama performed by the God Squad youth group of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fayetteville. My dear friend Justin Kollmeyer is the pastor there. It was a wonderful youth-performed drama of how today's generation deals with the multifaceted problems facing them. These were the basic "where is the envelope and how far can I go to open it" type questions. There was a good showing of people witnessing these gallant young people teaching not only their generation, but us adults also. Keep up the good work, God Squad and Pastor Justin press on, brother. Time is short. We must all continue to tell our story, tell our story, tell our story. Coupled with this fine performance we saw last night, and what other caring churches are doing, we can claim this generation for God through Christ. One day we will all be off the scene, and the footprints we leave behind are what it's all about. Hang in there, God Squad and TLC. Our little church has been called "the church alive, in the double wide on 85!!" And some have added, "with W-K-N-O-X radio station!" I have then added, "Blasting the airwaves at .002 kilowatts!! AM for now!" Each year about this time our whole church (eat your hearts out mega churches) convoys down to Destin, Fla., to conduct our annual Fishers of Men Retreat. Jesus said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." We book a good number of rooms at the military recreation facility which is right on the pristine bay side of Destin. The calm bay is about 75 feet from the hotel and the gentle breezes cool you all day and night. We will depart Thursday, June 7, and return Sunday, June 10. Saturday all fishermen and fisherwomen will board the "Follow Me" fishing boat, which will carry 22 fisherpersons and go out deep sea fishing for eight hours. Bring on the Dramamine. We will then conduct a fish fry on the bay and have our speaker, which last year was Rick Stanley, the stepbrother of Elvis Presley. Rick, as many of you know, is a dynamic evangelist and lived in Fayetteville for many years. Our daughter, Nikki, and Brittany, their daughter, are good friends. Rick and Robin and their two girls now live in Niceville, Fla., which is just over the bridge from Destin. Sunday we will clear out of our rooms and then conduct our final worship service on the beach there. Many lifelong commitments to Christ have come from these retreats. Pray for us and these commitments. Along with this wonderful retreat we have two people to baptize which we are planning to do in Destin in the ocean. I was also baptized in the ocean in Panama in 1956. The beat goes on and the church marches on toward that day when every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that He is Lord. March on! The Rev. Dr. Knox Herndon is the pastor of His House Community Church (SBC) and a former Army chaplain. The church has moved to its new location just below Senoia on Ga. Highway 85, a mile south of Ga. Highway 16 below the fire station. Visitors are welcome. Church office and prayer line number is 770-719-2365. E-mail address is KHERN2365@aol.com.
