More than 13,000 voters could change districts

Nearly 13,000 residents will be moved out of the commission and school board District 4 if Coweta achieves numerical parity in its redistricting.

County Administrator Theron Gay said the county will look at its redistricting proposals later this summer after it completes work on expansion of the water system.

Redistricting occurs after the Census Bureau supplies the county population numbers in each district. Gay received the numbers late last month and said the optimum number for each district is 17,825.

But to achieve that the county's fasting growing district around Thomas Crossroads, represented by Commissioner Leigh Schlumper, will see 13,000 residents shifted into other districts.

The smallest district is District 5, represented by Commissioner Robert Wood, which has only 10,462 residents.

Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter will also lose voters since his 1st District also grew significantly and has 19,397 voters.

Commissioner Jim McGuffey's District 2 has 13,950 voters and Commissioner Lawrence Nelms' District 3 has 14,960 voters. Both districts should receive more voters when the redistricting is complete.

Gay said all new districts would have to be approved by the U.S. Justice Department.
