Math students take top three places in district contest

Fayette math students recently swept the Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency math contest, which was open to middle school students.

Math teams from Fayette, Rising Starr and Flat Rock middle schools placed first, second and third, respectively. All students were required to take rigorous individual tests as well as participate in a ciphering round where they worked together as a team to formulate answers to problems.

Final scores were based on both the individual tests and ciphering event. In addition to team awards, individuals were recognized. Dee Humphrey and Matt Park of Fayette Middle took first and third place, respectively.

All middle schools were allowed to send teams of five to participate in the contest: two eighth-graders, two seventh-graders and one sixth-grader as an alternate. Below are the students who made up the winning teams at each school.

Fayette Middle: Dee Humphrey and Matt Park, eighth grade; Nia Chau and Bryan McBride, seventh grade; Russell McCord, sixth grade.

Rising Starr: Kelli McCalla and Scott Mayo, eighth grade; Katie Jacobsen and Midori Endo, seventh grade; Andrew Zheng, sixth grade.

Flat Rock: Danny Giglio and Matthew Alberts, eighth grade; Zain Kapadia and AAron Kirschner, seventh grade; Ashley Ellis, sixth grade.
