South water plant almost ready

It won't be long now before the South Fayette Water Plant begins pumping six million gallons of treated water daily.

Water Committee members last week looked over a rubbing for the brass plaque that will adorn the front of the plant, with the names of committee members, County Commission members and others who have been instrumental in getting the plant built.

An open house is tentatively planned for July, said Water System director Tony Parrott, though the plant should be operational long before then. "That'll give the grass a chance to grow and provide an opportunity to spruce up the landscaping," he said.

Committee Chairman Chuck Watkins appointed a subcommittee of Parrott, County Manager Chris Cofty and County Attorney Bill McNally to work out details of the celebration.

Staff members are learning their way around the facility, and chemicals are being delivered. All but minor details of construction are done, he said.

Because it's in an upscale residential area, the plant, on Antioch Road south of Brooks, has been built with architectural details designed to make it look like a large home.

Water will be pumped into the plant's raw water holding pond from Lake Horton nearby.

The $12 million water treatment plant is expected to add six million gallons a day to Fayette's drinking water supply, bringing the total treated water capacity to 20 mgd.

Bates Engineers Inc. is building the plant.

In other updates, Parrott said the foundation is finished and structural work will begin soon on a 2.5-million-gallon water tank on Ga. Highway 92 north at Lee's Mill Road.

Officials also hope to soon file a permit application to build Lake McIntosh on Line Creek.

Land purchases for the lake and for wetlands mitigation required for the project continue, and environmental assessments and other paperwork are almost ready, said County Attorney McNally.
