Math teacher to receive excellence award
The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics has selected Judith Chambers of North Fayette Elementary School to receive an Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics Award for 2001. The award, sponsored by GCTM, the Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the Roundtable Coalition, was created to recognize exceptional math teachers. Twenty-four teachers receive the "excellence" award each year. Elementary, middle and high school teachers are selected to represent each of the eight GCTM regions in Georgia. Chambers represents the Central West region and was the only Fayette County teacher to receive the award. In order to be nominated for the honor, teachers must have taught mathematics for at least three years in Georgia, possess strong content foundation in mathematics appropriate for their content level and show evidence of growth in the teaching of mathematics. The Roundtable Coalition will present a seminar in honor of recipients of the 2001 award in Savannah this October. In addition, Chambers has been invited to conduct a session on the topic of her choice at the Georgia Mathematics Conference Oct. 18-20 at Rock Eagle. Conference officials say that Chambers has been invited to speak due to her recognized abilities as a mathematics teacher.
