Arts center open house set

A two-day grand opening celebration June 7 and 9 will mark the debut of the Southwest Arts Center, the first Fulton County-owned venue built exclusively for the arts.

The Center is at 915 New Hope Road, SW, Atlanta.

Thursday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., County Commission Vice Chairman Emma I. Darnell, Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards, the Fulton County Arts Council and other officials will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public art dedication for invited guests.

Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., all Fulton County residents are invited to an open house to tour the facility and see art demonstrations.

The 14,000-sq. ft. facility will feature space for classes in visual art, drama, dance and music, as well as special events.

"It has been a challenging task but the community's persistence and support has paid off," said Darnell, who represented the area when the project was initiated by the Board of Commissioners.

The facility is on a 27-acre tract in Fulton County's District 7. Edwards, who represents the area, said, "This will be an absolute jewel for the community and great boost for the arts in South Fulton."

The center will begin operations Monday, June 18, with five week-long summer art camp sessions for children 6 - 14. Classes for adults and youths will begin in the fall.

Phase two of the center, now in the design stage, will include a 375-seat theater and additional landscaping.
