Banish summer boredom with books

Summer is a great time to catch up on your reading, and this summer the libraries around South Fulton will offer a summer reading program for all ages.

Seating for story times is on a first come, first served basis.

At the Central Library downtown, registration for weekly story times ends June 1. The library is at One Margaret Mitchell Square, and story time is on the basement level. The library is open Sundays 2 - 6 p.m. and Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Phone 404-730-1845.

Programs begin the week of June 1 and end the week of July 30.

Weekly story times emphasize books and may be accompanied by crafts and guest speakers.

Among programs will be reading and story times for all ages, a playhouse featuring full-length videos, craft programs using food, a magic show featuring D'Vante Parks (preregistration required), Fun Science with Andrea Alexander, and more.

The Central Library's learning center, on the fourth floor, offers introductory computer classes. Phone 404-730-1733 or check out the latest schedule online at HtmlResAnchor www.af.public.lib.ga.us.

The center also offers daily adult literacy programs and English as a second language tutoring. Information is available at the same number.

Also downtown, the teen center on the third floor (phone 404-730-1796) offers weekly story times, sometimes accompanied by crafts and guest speakers.

Classes also are offered in such topics as how to burn your own music into a CD, computer and Web page design classes, slam poetry and more, all geared to teens.

The College Park branch at 3647 Main St., College Park, also offers a variety of activities this summer, including an inflatable zoo where children are entertained with music, magic and inflatable balloon animals.

Storytellers Sherry Norfolk and Miss Nancy are on tap, and craft classes on "What else can I do with a newspaper?"

Afternoon movies are scheduled Thursdays, 1 - 3 p.m., June 14 - July 26.

Ongoing summer reading programs are available for all ages. Preregistration is required.

June 13 - Aug. 1, Cicely Bland will teach participants how to begin their own version of a summer reading newspaper. Registration is required.

Weekly story times are Wednesdays, June 6 - Aug. 1, and the summer reading program kicks off June 12 with Phil Macon.

A summer reading party with magician D'Avante Parks, movies at the East Point Auditorium, arts and crafts activities, fire safety programs with the East Point firefighters, and animal care with local veterinarian Dr. Ronald H. Tolbert are among special activities on tap.

The Fairburn/Hobgood-Palmer branch, 60 Valley View Drive Fairburn, also will be brimming with activities. Phone 770-306-3138.

Story times are June 20 - Aug. 1.

"A Grand Expedition," a puppet show for young children, is on the program as well. Preregistration is required for groups. The Inflatable Zoo is coming, along with a video party.

A demonstration of the art of juggling is planned as well.

Tuesdays in June and July will have story times for children at the Hapeville branch, 525 King Arnold St., Hapeville. Phone 404-762-4065.

Fun Science is planned June 28. Preregistration is required for Fun Science and for Circus Berzerkis with Atlanta Puppet in July.

Summer tales run June 5 - July 31 at the South Fulton branch, 4055 Flat Shoals Road, Union City. Phone 770-306-3092.

Registration is in May and June.

A book making work shop is planned with Khalil Raghman to introduce children to the basic techniques involved.
