Fairburn, Tyrone moving ahead on sewer deal despite Fayette protests

Fairburn officials are moving ahead with their plan to provide sewerage to Tyrone, despite objections from Fayette County.

Fairburn City Manager Tony Cox said he has not heard anything new from Fayette officials after Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn expressed his disapproval of Fairburn providing sewer capacity to Tyrone.

Cox said the city just has to have Fulton County and the city of Atlanta sign off on the city's permit before the excess capacity can be provided to the Fayette town.

Cox is hopeful the two governments will give their approval by the middle of June.

"I think Fulton County is just waiting for all the cities to give their approval," Cox said.

In the meantime, Tyrone officials are waiting for the approval before issuing building permits for a John Wieland Homes mixed-use development on Ga. Highway 74. Wieland is seeking sewer service for the neighborhood because poor soils in the area make septic systems a risky prospect.

Tyrone Town Manager Barry Amos believes the sewer lines could be run within 90 days of the permit being granted and the town is ready to move forward with the Wieland project.

The permits could have been finalized earlier, but Amos explained that Fairburn had to change its service delivery strategy.

"It read that sewerage would be provided by Fulton County. Now it reads [that] it will be provided by the county and Fairburn," he said.

In order to change the strategy, all the governments in Fulton County have to approve the project.

Amos has not heard any objections from anybody in Fulton County, but said the hangup appears to be getting the project through the city of Atlanta bureacracy.

Tyrone officials last week approved a Publix grocery store at the Wieland site, but Amos said the store will need the sewer capacity from Fairburn before it can be built.
