Making fitness fun gets students interested in exercise

When it comes to exercise, many children and young adults would rather work on the computer, play video games, talk on the telephone or watch television.

Caroline Bradley, health teacher at Rising Starr Middle School, is working hard to change students' attitudes about exercise and fitness. She says her goal is to get her students interested in participating in some type of fitness activity for at least 30 minutes each day.

"If we can reach kids at an early age and teach them how to stay healthy, then they are likely to develop good habits that will carry over into adulthood," says Bradley.

Bradley says the key to meeting her goal is to show students that fitness can be fun. As part of the health curriculum, Bradley often takes her students outside to teach them simple games and exercises that they can do either by themselves or with a group to help condition their hearts and bodies.
