Graduates to take flight in ceremonies Friday By DAVE

In ceremonies this weekend, more than 1,400 Fayette County students will say goodbye to high school and make their way into college or the world of work. Fayette County and McIntosh high schools will fete their seniors Friday at 8 p.m.; Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill at 6 p.m. The students' top students academically will play key roles in the ceremonies. At McIntosh, senior class officer Katie Newton will give welcoming remarks. Michael Lee, the school's seventh-ranked student, will introduce sponsors, and third-ranked Kristin Karker will introduce salutatorian Lyndi Barclay. After Barclay's remarks, fourth-ranking student Yosuke Namura will introduce valedictorian Jennifer Saxon for the keynote address. The National Anthem will be presented by the Chamber Choir, directed by Frank Green. Principal Greg Stillions, Superintendent John DeCotis and school board member Marion Key will present diplomas, and the alma mater will be introduced by fifth-ranked student Andrew Hendbry. Loren Stephens, ranked sixth academically, will lead the changing of tasels and turning of rings. Master of ceremonies Joanne Dirring will welcome attendees to the FCHS ceremony, followed by speeches by salutatorian Stephanie Weitzel and valedictorian Michael Spradlin. Principal Gary Phillips and Fred Oliver, assistant superintendent for operations, will present special awards, and class sponsor Teresa D. Ellison will perform a special reading. The FCHS select chorus will perform the class song, "I Hope You Dance." Phillips will present diplomas as Lynn Ridgeway reads the names. Student body President Matt Fuhrman will provide welcoming remarks for Starr's Mill's graduation. Sixth-ranked senior Kim DeLaney will introduce sponsors. Seventh-ranked Krisen Shockley will introduce class officers, and Danielle Cagle, ranked fourth, will introduce salutatorian Kelsi Matwick. Valedictorian Keri Matwick will be introduced by Kristen Tuttle, ranked third. Alice Martin, senior class president, will introduce special awards, to be presented by Principal Sam Sweat and representatives of the Board of Education. After Sweat presents diplomas, fifth-ranked student Chad Troop will introduce the alma mater, lead by Dan Lane and the school chorus. Senior class treasurer Cathryn Slasinski will lead changing of the tassels, and student body President Matt Fuhrman turning of the rings. Harrison Camp, class secretary, will make a special presentation, and the class will sing the class song, "Leaving Town," by Dexter Freebish. Honor graduates Kimberly Brusch and Dough Niggley will introduce valedictorian Emily Kirby and salutatorian Kimberly Alberts. Principal Charles Warr will present the Atlanta Journal Cup and C.J. Mowell will present the Mowell Cup for the best all around seniors. Seniors, accompanied by the SCHS chorus, will sing the class song "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye," by Boyz to Men. Additional music will be provided by the school's symphonic band.
