Fayetteville takes in elementary school land

Fayetteville's city limits will expand to take in the planned elementary school on Lester Road.

City Council Thursday night approved annexation and rezoning of 94 acres so that the school can be within the city limits.

Work is expected to begin soon on Cleveland Elementary School to ease overcrowding at neighboring schools and draw from residents moving into Stonebriar and other nearby developments.

There is also room on the northern side of Lester Road for a middle school in a few years, but definite plans concerning its construction have not yet been made.

The Fayette County Board of Education bought the entire tract because it could not be purchased in sections. There has been mention of the tract on the south side of Lester Road, now zoned for residential use, being used for a future high school, but any such use would be a decade away.

The county's next high school is already in the works in the southern end of the county, and it will not be open before the fall of 2004. That portion of the property could be developed in some other way in the future.

School system officials requested the annexation because of their desire to tie into the city's sewer system, and city officials agreed that would be a good move environmentally.

Cleveland Elementary is expected to draw nearly its entire student body from south of Ga. Highway 54, so traffic on the highway should not be affected a great deal, school officials said.

In other business Thursday, the council approved a $32,250 bid for installation of a traffic signal at Ga. Highway 92 and Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard.
