Light for MacDuff Parkway at least 6-8 weeks away; developers still waiting for DOT permit

Peachtree City residents shouldn't expect a traffic light on Ga. Highway 54 West for MacDuff Parkway anytime soon.

Developers responsible for moving the signal there from its current location at Wynnmeade Parkway have told the city it will take between six and eight weeks for the project from start to finish, said Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. That time frame is dependent upon the issuance of a permit from the Georgia Department of Transportation, which is expected in the next few days, Williams added.

Meanwhile, during periods of heavy traffic, motorists are finding it near impossible to turn left off MacDuff Parkway toward the heart of Peachtree City. The City Council was slated to discuss a host of options to improve rush-hour traffic in the area at its meeting last night.

The city has allowed one project on the new MacDuff Parkway to partially open. Summit Apartments has been allowed to open three of its buildings for occupancy, but city officials don't want to issue any more certificates of occupancy until the traffic light work is done.

When the signal is relocated, there will be a period of time when neither Wynnmeade nor MacDuff have a signal. But Williams said the city has been told the down time "will be very brief."

The DOT originally ordered back in 1999 that MacDuff Parkway could not open until the signal was relocated. But in a letter issued this month, the DOT agreed to temporarily open the road for right-in, right-out only access for 120 days.

To get around the heavy traffic, many motorists turn right out of MacDuff so they can turn around in the Wynnmeade subdivision and use that light to get eastbound access to Hwy. 54.
