Local students honored in congressional art contest Michelle Walden of Starr's Mill High School won the People's Choice Award and Ashley Fannin of Fayette County High won fourth place overall in the 3rd congressional District Art Show recently. The People's Choice Award carries a $50 prize, a ribbon and certificate. Walden's art teacher is T.A. Little. Fannin's fourth place award nets her a $25 prize, ribbon and certificate, and her art work will hang in 3rd District U.S. Rep. Mac Collins' district offices for one year. Shelby Northcutt of Muscogee County's Jordan High School took first place in the. The young artist won a certificate, a ribbon, a $100 prize, and a trip for two to Washington to see her artwork hung in the nation's Capitol. It will hang in the Capitol for one year. Northcutt's art teacher, Shary Williams, also won a trip to Washington for the ceremony. Northcutt competed against 103 student artists representing 16 different schools in the art contest at Clayton State College & State University in Morrow. The artwork was displayed at the university's Harry S. Downs Continuing Education Building. Similar contests are conducted in congressional districts across the country and provide many young artists a chance to gain recognition.
