Georgia's county commissioners honor Collins

Georgia's county commissioners conferred their most prestigious award for excellence in government on a U.S. congressman who has served as a county commissioner himself.

The Association of County Commissioners of Georgia awarded Rep. Mac Collins, of Georgia's 3rd District, the 2001 Wayne Shackelford Excellence in Government Award.

"Getting this award from Georgia's county commissioners means a lot to me, because if anybody in this country understands government and its impact on the average citizen, it is a county commissioner," Collins said after receiving the award.

"I did serve on the [Butts] County Commission, and I would do it again, because counties are closest to the people," he added. "You don't know how much this means to me. This is the first award I've received for being a county commissioner, and it's named after my good friend, Wayne Shackelford."

Shackelford is a former Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner , who started his public service career as an assistant county agent and finished as head of the DOT. Collins won the first presentation of the Shackelford Award from the ACCG.

Mitchell County Chairman and second vice president of the ACCG Benjamin Hayward presented Collins the award in front of an audience of over 1,200 county officials from all of Georgia's 159 counties.

"For this award, we sought an individual who not only began his career in local government, but has excelled at every level to represent Georgia with commitment and purpose," Hayward said. "Congressman Collins is just such an individual."
