Eight Fayette students get Air Force Academy appointments

This year eight Fayette County students have been selected to attend the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"Most areas won't get any appointments; a handful may get one," according to Major Scott Smith, admissions liaison officer for Fayette County. "For a single county to have eight appointments is simply unbelievable. I've had more than one parent joke that if your child wants to attend the Air Force Academy you should move to Fayette County!"

Three of the county's four high schools will be sending their graduates: From McIntosh High School, Andrew Conwell and Andrew Stimpson; from Fayette County High School Megan Byrd; and from Starr's Mill High School Kristin Tuttle, Matt Fuhrman, Mac Byard and Brad McLaren.

Matt McBride, also from Starr's Mill, attended the academy's prep school last year and will also enter the academy this year.

An appointment is the equivalent of a full four-year scholarship.

Ranked number one last year by the Princeton Review, the Air Force Academy is first and foremost a military institution designed to train future leaders. Upon graduating, they will be commissioned as second lieutenants, and while many will elect to attend pilot training, many non-flying career fields also are available.
