Buckle up or pay up during seat belt blitz
Not wearing your seat belt can cost you a fine anytime, but between now and Memorial Day, your chances of getting a ticket will increase greatly. Law enforcement agencies in eight Southeastern states, including three in Fayette County, will participate in the first region-wide crackdown on adults who don't buckle up and don't buckle up their children. "Click it or ticket" is the theme of the media and enforcement blitz. Officers in all eight states will ticket drivers who violate seat belt or child restraint laws, and more than 16,000 check points will be set up across the region. Other agencies will step up patrolling in attempts to catch violators. A $3.2 million television and radio advertising campaign will accompany the crackdown. Traffic crashes are the number one cause of serious injury and death for children and adults through age 37. In 1999, 32,061 drivers and passengers died in wrecks. An estimated 9,553 of these victims would be alive today if they had worn their seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fayette agencies participating are the Sheriff's Department and the police departments in Tyrone and Fayetteville.
