Office complex for Crabapple area is denied

A proposal to convert residentially zoned land south of Crabapple Lane for an office complex has been denied by the Peachtree City Council.

Pathway Communities had requested the rezoning for a 6.72-acre tract on the western side of Ga. Highway 74 North. At last week's council meeting, some residents in the area opposed the rezoning.

Some of the residents claimed if the rezoning was approved, a developer for a proposed residential project to the north would seek an office-institutional rezoning. It was also noted that other adjacent property owners to the south might seek O-I rezoning and change the appearance of the area forever.

In denying the rezoning, the council upheld the recommendation from the Planning Commission and city staff.

Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services, said the land use plan never intended the area to have non-residential development west of Hwy. 74. There is quite of bit of retail and office development on the other side of Hwy. 74, including the new office building for World Airways and the Kedron Village retail center.

Jerry Peterson of Pathway Communities argued that the office complex would allow for the creation of a more pleasant entrance to the city. He also said it would be difficult to divide the land up into just three lots according to its current R-43 designation.
